Hey, it worked for Star Trek. Let's hijack a franchise that sucked, but was a bastion of tasteless sexism, and flip it all around to boot!
Stir it all up in a pot and air it on the SciFi channel and what do yet get? That's right! You get a steaming pile of crap called Battlestar Galactica. Battlestar Galactica escues originality by relying on some tired old formulas for making greenbacks off of old franchises while guaranteeing good press by pandering to the prodominantly leftist media. Here is the formula:
- Hire a few actors who are also activists, the crazier the cause, the better.
- Make sure to rewrite at least one archetypal male role into a female character, whether it makes sense or not. Be as hamfisted about it as possible.
- Make sure the plots are thinly veiled propoganda, whether you actually understand the politics or not.
Number two was rewriting Starbuck as woman to replace a blatantly womanizing character from the original series played by Dirk Benedict (of A-Team fame). They replaced the womanizing with her being a drunken, unfaithful, reckless slut.
Number three was achieved when the show aired a series of episodes involving a resistance/occupation scenerio in the which the resistance was referred to insurgents in order to give the appearance of being analogous to the situation in Iraq, making the case that the real life insurgents are just as much heroes as the show insurgents. The problem is, the resistance on the show was not an insurgency by any stretch of the word. The writers simply did not have the talent to create an insurgency scenerio that would cast insurgents in a heroic light.
At least when Star Trek took up political causes the propaganda was subtle and masked with terrific writing. Battlestar Galactica can't even boast mediocre writing, or political messenges that make one iota of sense within the context of the plots.
Battlestar Galactica needs to sucked out of the airlock and off the air.
